You go to the gun store, you fill out a 4473 (picrel), and the gun store employee submits it. You also need a driver's license or ID. The background check takes anywhere from 10 mins to like an hour. Then you get the gun.
State laws may apply, but that's how it is where I live. There is no waiting period for handguns where I live either, you just need to be 21+ to own one.

Each rocket is a destructive device and requires a tax stamp of $200 (currently, that might change very soon), plus a background check, plus a waiting period. And you have to follow certain regulations on the storage of explosives.

But if you have the money and time, you can do it.
