The spanish inquisition, and admitedly I am not as knoledgeable as I should be on this topic, was more akin to a secret police/tribunal court which was propped up by the Catholic Kings and their descendants in order to maintain social cohesion in a newborn unified nation. Not many similarities to nationalistic militias/guerrillas.
