Your picture reminds me of something I meant to bring up the other day but forgot.
The classic angels like the one in your picture are the western version of Garudas, which are the bird-like beings that are at war with Nagas, the serpent beings that live underground and in the water. Later, Buddha are shown negotiating peace between the two.

Now a lot of Catholic art symbolizes defeating aspects of the lower self with its imagery of knights defeating dragons, but some of it is a reference to the war between the Garudas and the Nagas.
They're related.
