I honestly think each king enlarged an existing pyramid like the Maya did. Mayan temple pyramids are like onions with later temples built over previous ones. This would explain the voids, extra burial chambers, air shafts that curve around unknown obstacles and end at dead ends, and the size.
It's easier to add a layer to an existing pyramid/temple than to build a whole new one.
Also - iron knife in the bronze age.
