There's a YouTube channel that's archived Soviet television programs including musical programs and old Pesnya goda ("Song of the Year") episodes (that show still runs in Russia). Here's the 1980 broadcast, fun fact the first song is disco:

I don't care for a lot of Soviet popular music. It's pretty boring, chintzy stuff with sugary people singing songs about the sun, springtime, friendship, whatever -- meh! Just shoot me already. The state did like to promote classical music though, which I like and isn't something people unfamiliar with communist regimes might realize.

This is a thing. People who are like "I'm demoralized living in capitalism, communism doesn't seem so bad" don't really understand the hatred that built up inside the system. I've only read about it but it was like a total demoralization that went beyond merely being bummed out, and opposition to it ceased to have a political character as we might understand it, it was just really deep and widespread existential hatred that the Communist Party was aware of (and acted as such, these were police states), but they would of course lie and never come out and say that's why they were acting the way they did. I think this was probably worse in Soviet satellite states though because communism was forced on them.
