After the Union of Lublin in 1569, which the Ruthenian (proto-Ukrainian) boyars wanted and voted for themselves, Ruthenian nobles got literally the same rights as Polish nobility. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's political Golden Liberty system was a decentralised semi-democracy with local nobilities ruling themselves in their regions and local sejmiks. This includes the Ruthenian boyars/magnates/szlachta living in Polish Ukraine.
