Despite its name implying it's a defensive spell, mirror force is actually an offensive spell that activates instantly when an attack is declared, and is resolved before the attack even happens, which is why it's such a powerful card even today. It literally negates defence negation (which several monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh do actually have) since it resolves before monster attacks happen.
