This is why I mentioned originally, that "some PDF files" are not a "combined image" - as you two have discovered, some of the text that goes in the text balloons is a separate file and simply converting these PDFs gives you the empty files.
I purchased PICREL to rip and share in 2020 and ran into that problem just breaking the DRM, because the book I purchased (not Kindle or CMX) was a PDF conversion so the tool I used, which normally works great on DC/Marble/Image/DH, etc., didn't. Tomasi's book was an Abrams Comic Art release and since Minutemen and others had ripped from there, I didn't expect a problem.
Calibre joins these PDFs if you use it, but again you end up with their SD's file. But if you just want to read something as a non-PDF file, that's your better bet unless you want to do this much work: >>149343046 which might be OKAY on a floppies but I wasn't about to do for 100-200 page GNs.
