Rem, and by a lesser margin other side characters overshadowed Emilia in terms of likability and character by complete accident. Rem however became one of the most recognizable characters in anime in terms of both popularity and sales. And since Emilia is the author's pet waifu he had to write out the competition and started to drive the series into the ground to accommodate Emilia's non existent character.
