Akio Toyoda is a Japanese businessman, who currently serves as chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation. He was previously Toyota Motor Corporation’s president and chief executive officer. He also attended World Economic Forum meetings.
Akio Toyoda is the son of Shoichiro Toyoda and Hiroko Toyoda, making him the current heir of the Toyoda automobile fortune. His father, Shoichiro Toyoda, served as chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation from 1992 to 1999. He was also chairman of the influential Japan Business Federation from 1994 to 1998. Tatsuro Toyoda, Akio’s uncle, served in various roles at including Honorary chairman of the Toyota Foundation, Senior advisor and member of the board of Toyota Central R&D Labs, and Chairman of the board of Toyota Technological Institute.
Akio Toyoda is a great-grandson of the industrialist Sakichi Toyoda, who founded the family’s textile company, then named Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. Akio’s grandfather, Kiichiro Toyoda, transitioned the company from textile production towards automotive manufacturing, thus establishing Toyota Motor Company. He became the company’s first vice president then later its president. Akio’s first cousin once removed, Eiji Toyoda, served as president and later chairman of Toyota Motor Company. During his tenure as chairman, he oversaw the company’s merger with Toyota Motor Sales Co., Ltd, which was then renamed as Toyota Motor Corporation. He was also a member of the Trilateral Commission.
