If you were watching back then, the last third of the show went places not many people liked (I did) and you can find a lot of old forum posts and blogs talking about how shit it was even before that last episode. I remember trying to find production info a few years ago and all links led to several different blogs shitting all over it, notably the inconsistencies and the castle shit.
I think opinion shifted over time because of "better" subs playing a huge role in people discovering the show and liking Kurenai Otoya, so it very narrowly escaped the Wizard-Ghost circle of hell.
