I won't deny the community feeling eroding over time, but I also think you can blame catalogs being much bigger than they once were. Back before 2010 the anime most people watched was stuff that was popular on /a/ from like 2005-2010, or things that were on Toonami. Now you have to connect over a niche within a niche and that makes having a long conversation hard unless you both have the same kind of autism (and when this happens it's still magical).
