I feel like this time is even worse than WWII or other such times, for the simple reason that there is no hope. We saw a flash of this in the 90s, then it kind of went away for a while, but now it is back and worse than ever.
The simple reason is everything is getting worse, and is only going to get worse for the foreseeable future. I mean, it's obvious isn't it?
In the past everything was either getting better, or there was hope that it would get better soon. Be that by winning the war, winning the cultural revolution of the 60s, doing absolutely fucking heaps of cocaine and investing in something or other in the 80s, the rise of the internet changing the world in the 2000s...
Now there is nothing to look forward to. The rise of AI? Nobody really seems to want it. It should replace most menial labour jobs, meaning the excess wealth generated would be distributed fairly amongst the populace and we would all get richer for less work. But we know it won't, the excess wealth will be concentrated in the hands of a privileged few, and the rest of us will be forced even deeper into serfdom. The majority of western people are doing makework jobs anyway, so what difference would it make if it's AI doing it?
To make matters even worse, AI is going to destroy the cultural touchstones people have had since the beginning of globalization. Music has been the marker of subculture since the 60s and even before. But what good is music? AI can generate something that sounds just like the dumb fuckin music you listen to FOR FREE in a matter of seconds. No one can consider themselves an 'artist' anymore because art is completely redundant, and no one can relate to """artists""" anymore because they can never trust that it was made by a human with real emotion, it's no different to if a machine did it. Even the escapes from the economic abyss are falling into that very same abyss.
There is no meaning to life anymore, and there never will be again.
It's over.
