people don't say "nothing happened" because there aren't enough big explosions or an overall escalation of violence

People say "nothing happened" because they feel like there isn't a clear progression from plot point A -B-C-D and so on.
It doesn't feel like every plot point is slowly but surely building up towards any meaningful change in the characters and world.
It just feels like a series of mostly disconnected events that leave little impact on the characters.
