There is a cybernetic race that has come out of deep space long ago. They appear to be robots, a mistake which is sometimes still made in-universe, but despite their mechanical bodies they have organic brains.
This species has nodespheres, which are massive ships, each of which contains a huge sprawling mass of an organic brain which acts as the leader and focus of worship for the cyborgs it creates. Each cyborg brain is created as a growth off this central brain which is delicately severed and placed in a mechanical body. Each individual cyborg has a tiny sandgrained bit of the crystal which powers this universe's FTL inserted into their brain. This allows them to communicate instantly with the main brain, and the brain is able to act as a central node of communication between cyborgs. This makes their ability to coordinate very powerful. Despite this connection they are not a hivemind, each individual has its own personality.
The nodesphere brains can communicate with each other.
The main war in the setting came to an end when the brains were destroyed by an advanced technological means. The destruction of the brains severed the connection the cyborgs had between each other. The event was so mentally shocking that in the moment many of them locked up from mental shock. Some recovered but without the ability to mentally communicate they ended up with a sense of great loss.
