There are two speakers (Paul and James, I think) on the matter of a living faith. Sins can be forgiven. Even before Christ, God could repent of his anger (much to Jonah's chagrin). But a living faith is one that has rejected its sins and produces good works. It has evidence to its existence. To fully indulge in worldly desires and sin day after day, with a token "my bad" on the way out, is a dead faith. And the outcome of a dead faith is unknown but implied by Jesus along the wide highway, narrow gate parable - people who think they are saved, and called Jesus "Lord" but are not saved (Matthew 7:21-23). In argument to that implication is that of no works which withstand the test of fire, "saved from the fires but only just barely" (1 Corinth 3:15). The difference between them may be that of living faith, the meaning and intentions of these men.
