The US fought the war of independence so that they could expand west of the Mississippi and genocide the natives. Canada and Australia played by Britain's rules. In this country the expansion west was slowed by legal matters with the Red Indians. Notwithstanding residential schools, the Crown enforced a legal basis for westward expansion while the Americans were fighting wars to expand. Then the idea of what makes us different from Americans hinders our own development.
