>Sumeru - India / Egypt
If I squinted very hard I could give you Egypt on Aaru since it does look somewhat genuine and the pyramids, sci-fyified as they are, are still pyrmaids.
But there's no India in the clothing/buildings/ships of Sumeru. Those buildings are a mix of Art Deco and Elves from the LotR movie trilogy. Look up Indian temples and homes. It's just a completely different world to both the Hindu or Persianate traditions that India is built on.
>Fontaine - France / Italy
You can just listen to the main art director in the initial stream, he lays it out fairly clearly. Fontaine is supposed to look like a fairytale painting. Hence those fairytale homes with crooked chimneys and mountains that literally come to a point. Fontaine's again getting a bit of Art Deco (seeing the pattern here?) architecture, then the dash of steampunk in the shacktowns.
But really this is going for a fairytale place look, not France and most definitely not Italy. The clothing is anime, fullstop. That kind of pseudo-European look that you'll never see in Europe, only Asian works about Europe that don't do any research.
>Natlan
People have been over this a million times. It's not America, Mesoanon has fairly thoroughly destroyed that notion. And it's not Africa either, you can look at photos of Mali, Zulu towns, Ethiopia, none of it looks like Natlan.
Can't tell you what they were going for with the visuals of the buildings and clothes beyond the obvious rap/hip-hop/beach/cowboy aesthetics.
People just endlessly overstate the fact they use foreign language names everywhere to mean they're pulling from those places. But they're not. For fuck's sake, half of those translations are invented in the EN localisation whereas the CN/JP/KR just coin a new fantasy word in old Chinese words.
