>feels guilty about something that happened in childhood
>is helping one or probably two adults do bad things
>made some kind of promise to these adults that they feel the need to hold over him, presumably to ensure his compliance
>but he still agrees with the goal enough to maintain the illusion and even mess with the Soul for his own entertainment
My current theory is that Kris was involved in whatever made Dess get lost (duh) and that the Knight and friends are trying to find her, making Kris suffer by hosting the SOUL mostly because of the Prophecy but also partially out of spite for him "losing" Dess.
This also plays into their violent reactions regarding Noelle in the Weird Route. It's not only rage at how we're treating her, but also their attempt to stop us from turning her into a weapon against the Knight and friends, something that can actually beat them in what may otherwise be an unwinnable, possibly prearranged, battle somewhere down the road.
