Most deserts have viable ecosystems, things do in fact live there. While the picture in the OP shows bare sands, it’s entirely possible they ripped up desert vegetation to put those in. The deserts near me can be salt flats, but they can also be as “lush” (relatively speaking of course” as pic related.
Deserts like the Sonoran can be even more filled with life and are hauntingly beautiful. There are stories of activists crying (are they never not crying?) while relocating desert tortoises in California ahead of the bulldozers clearing the land for solar farms. In their defense, it’s apparently well known that relocated desert tortoises tend to die. I don’t personally know why, we don’t have those up here.
What we do have is birds and various antelope and deer and wild horses and coyotes and so on that depend directly or indirectly on the brush and other vegetation, and the examples I have see so far basically scrape the top off the land and removed everything for miles before installing the panels.
Anyway, it would likely no do a much damage if they put them in salt flats or sand dunes, but around here they don’t for a number of reasons, and I have no reason to believe China does things any differently when putting theirs in.
