It does suck inconcievable levels of ass that it turned out this way, though even if it was another 2d project not very much would come out of it I don't think (and at least this is good for a laugh).
Look at the Kenshin remake, I take it people like it and for a while it had a weekly thread going, but personally the only thing I got from it was decently-drawn lewds of Karou and Misao and this little gachapon figure of Kenshin I got the other day.
Save for actively passing up one of the best sountracks in the history of animation, I think a 2d Fist of the North Star remake would turn out the same way.
