It's a core part of his character that only went away for a bit during namek. His refusal to fight was how Goku ended up dead vs Raditz and the cause for Piccolo's death vs nappa and bejita. It's still a core part of his character to this day and was the whole focus of the story during Super Hero

I think that simplicity is kinda the fun of it though. Anyone can just pick him up in the moment and use him when the situation arises. Tying meta cooler down with schizo history would ruin the gimmick
