1. Ancestry. If they had a strong dad (or more rarely a strong mom), and the grand-parents beyond that were strong? Then that's of course desirable. Furthermore, you want to pair up matching histories. A long line of sprinters will produce great sprinters. Etcetera, etcetera.

2. Health and behaviour. Having health issues makes it more likely those will be inherited, so it's not terribly desirable. Furthermore, aggression and odd behaviour has a habit of being passed down. Just look at the Stay Gold Dynasty. Behaviour is far less important than health though.

3. Sometimes it's just about the horse's preference. This is like a 1% case of 1% cases, but if your horse likes a mare, the team are probably going to try and set something up. McQueen and Ikuno Dictus or Kitasan Black and Sweep Tosho are decent examples. If your stud is a bit of a bully, it's also a good idea to get them a mare they'll actually want to sleep with.
