Haven't seen it but that situation sounds kind of similar to Ninku.
The Manga's art is vile looking, the anime being done by most of Yu Yu Hakusho's staff is a massive upgrade from the art style, the animation is also really fluid. On top of all that the manga is really episodic and takes a long while to add the rest of the cast, while the anime has the cast reunite almost immediately and rewrites several cases of the week to be more ingrained on to the plot, which makes them so much better since it changes some of the villains from generic assholes to soldiers with a bit more depth.
