Niš area has been a serbian territory since the 12th century at least. Serbs fought for the liberation of Niš in first serbian uprising, pic related is where the famous battle of Čegar took place. Nišlije were always more oriented towards the rest of Serbia, even though there was Bulgarian cultural influence of course, but it was never more prevalent than Serbian.

Well yes, but Torlakian culture is basically a common ground between Serbian and Bulgarian ones. Genetically, they're Serbs, Bulgarians, Vlachs and everything in between
