This mindrot even infected our military. The Army had the bright idea after WWII that precision bombs and artillery in the Nuclear Age made individual rifle marksmanship irrelevant and therefore an unnecessary expense (fortunately the Marines were smarter than this). Our interventions in the Orient quickly highlighted the folly of this approach (the Army's trainees performed poorly and Marines and ruralchads with prior shooting experience got good results) and training efforts were once again directed at developing individual marksmanship.
