In my experience 'campaign' usually relates to tabletop gaming; stuff like D&D. You have a guy running a game and a group of players piloting their individual characters through whatever scenarios the Game Master cooks up. This can take a lot of different forms but the most common (in my experience) is that the GM paints the broad strokes of a plot or overarching conflict and then sets the players loose to see what they do, adapting the scenario as players make choices and interact with stuff.

Sorta like a multi-player version of the OG Fallout games if you want a vidya example, except instead of a mostly static game world that sometimes reacts to player input the GM is managing everything behind the scenes (can be better or worse) and the calculations are happening on dice and paper instead of your computer doing background math.
