It was a Donkey Kong game. You don't play AS Donkey Kong, you're some new hero who has to go through stages and face off against Donkey Kong, possibly as a boss fight at each level. The game didn't get that far, and ti was scrapped. They shopped around, and hired Rare to make the new DK game, under their supervision.
The change is that Rare's DK game stars DK and his side-kick gang of Kongs, rather than being the antagonists. The rest is history. This is actually a rather radical interpretation since up to this point, DK was a baddie like Bowssr.
This beta game's assets and engine were recycled for Yoshi's Island, which is a good game. So this game's development led to FOUR good games, not just one. Not bad right?
