Nothing to do with that at all. We simply have a longer history with the subcontinental region here from former Commonwealth colonial ties, so the term Asian for them stuck, while East/SE Asians were called oriental, and later all grouped as ‘Chinese’ both of which much of the older generations still say. The word ‘Asian’ has NEVER had a positive connotation here unlike most of the West, so this claim of obfuscation doesn’t make sense.
