It's really just a method to build attachment to the platform - people pimp out their profile with badges, etc, and when they look at something like EGS, there's the 'but muh badges.. i can't express my love for this game on my profile', etc etc.
desu, they might get me, if they chose their characters better, but i have thankfully managed to dodge this pitfall over multiple re-releases of older games.
