Science and technology, the re-enlightenment has a lot do do with Henry VIII.
Catholic church wouldn't let him dump the wives who weren't bearing him sons so he split and set up his own church.
This move away from centralized control by The Vatican encouraged independent research, invention and ultimately the industrial revolution.

Christianity did nothing to advance western civilization - it was getting the church out of the way that allowed it to thrive.

All because of Henry's balls.
