“Main Base Alpha.” You note as Hail nods, your eyes flicking back to the board.
The mud map put together by the Red Hand falls well short of the exacting detail of the holomaps used in Company briefings, but it’s a damn sight more accurate than something just scratched together in the field mid-operation. You can see it’s been expanded, revised and updated a lot more than your initial recon of the place confirmed. As the months dragged on braving the burnt out firelanes and risking Cradler patrols that far in became unacceptable, but you’re guessing Hail must have been sending out his own people to keep an eye on it on the down low since then. You pause at a particular little pennant repeated about halfway across the base.
“So that’s where the 280s got to.” You recognised the scratched in sigil from your own briefings, nestled in the long stretch between the Longwave intercept tower and the two Titan bays. “Am I really counting upwards of 70 cohorts barracks there? I thought we hit 'em a lot harder than that.”
The 280th Imperial Legion was the closest to Dis when the rebellion kicked off in earnest, most of it’s many cohorts had already been planetside on various garrison duties. That made them the first proper Imperial forces to advance into the equatorial jungles when the Savis counter-offensive came, and the first to fall afoul of their enemies newfound affinity for jungle warfare. Your people and the rebels bloodied them bad, so bad in fact that you suspect your grisly success in giving the 280s one bad day after the next was why the Cradler Auxiliaries ended up being deployed in here in force with the next back of Legion reinforcements.
“It’s closer to 100, the whole legion in full, but you’re not wrong. Word is that a new muster from Savisholme was shipped out to replenish their ranks, mostly common pups from overcrowded dens. I have it on good authority that damn near every surviving Sav that deployed here from the start has been promoted to at least squad leader.”
“When was this?”
“I can’t say exactly when the promotions went through, but they wouldn’t have waited for the recruits to disembark and that was less than a week ago.”
