It's okay that we have different interpretations of zeta. I think it's what makes part of discussing series so fun. Char definitely uses people to obtain his goals. As he said it himself " i'm on my own side". He doesn't see the results of his actions until it's too late and he lives with regrets. He was right when he said he doesn't know how to do anything but be a pilot. He gets pissed when backed in to a corner re: haman. However he's pissed at himself more than anything. He tells other people to not care but yet he cycles through the same mistakes because he does care and doesn't know how to act properly (kamille and four).
All of that said I think abandoning his identity gave him a reprieve and let him truly 'relax' and just enjoy being a pilot without the stress.
to be fair though i still don't really like quattro/char over kamille but i can see his actions and why he would want to go full nuclear. I do actually think he cared a lot for kamille; faggot way or or not.
