to be fair, runes are basically fractalized sigils, and sigils are words visualized (think ouiji boards with lines between the letters that make up a word)
while runes themselves are letters.

for instance, using hebrew letters on an egyptian "chart" (the basis of most languages), the word cat would look like the attached picture.
