The European Union is preparing to push for sanctions against China over its support for Russia in the war against Ukraine, Politico reports, citing a source.

Fifteen EU member states have asked Beijing to explain reports that Chinese-made drone engines were secretly shipped to Russia via front companies under the label of "industrial refrigeration units" to circumvent Western sanctions.

China either denied involvement or refused to respond.

"The report is accurate and it shows China is escalating its role, both quantitatively and qualitatively. It's fair to say that without Chinese support, the war would look very different right now," a European diplomat said.

According to him, the EU has been aware of Chinese drone transfers to Russia since before reports surfaced.

"After August, we will push for sanctions. We want dialogue - but also action," the diplomat added.

Politico also notes that sanctions against India are possible.
