The Irish seem to historically share a similar geographic predicament to ours. They are a western periphery country "blocked" by a major power from the rest of Europe.
It seems only logical that Ireland would do the same thing we did but in reverse. Ally with a continental power (like France for example) in order to have a trump card they could use to relieve pressure from the British.
They also seem to have a very obvious path toward expanding and exploring west like we did.
How come those two things never happened? It seems like the natural way to go just looking at geography alone. Any Irishlads know?
