While there's a bit of the Lamar Hunt "The team lost 1 million dollars last year... well I guess I only have 100 years to figure it out" philosophy they're also both bottom-line minded businesspeople in a large profit-minded market.
Ultimately while the NBA knows how to ride a star to the top of Sports Ratings nationally and internationally, there's also the team-level where there are 12 teams that don't have Caitlin Clark trying to fill stadiums, get people watching their games and buying their shirts and jerseys. These are the games that matter to the existence of the WNBA as anything more than a Summer League for women who make most of their money in the Former USSR and Mediterranean where Women's Basketball is more popular.
