This. Goku doesn’t love adventure, he loves combat. He tolerates adventure because it sometimes leads to combat and that’s a crucial difference that so many fans and, even the people behind the show, completely miss.
In the Pilaf arc, you're 100% right. Goku was dragged into the plot. He didn’t seek anything out except food and maybe someone to talk to. It was Bulma’s hyperdrive ambition that got the story moving. And through it all, Goku only ever perked up when there was someone to fight, train with, or beat. He’s not an adventurer, he’s a battle savant. That’s why his idea of fun is:
>spending a year in a time chamber to spar with his son
>ditching earth to train with literal angels
>letting his mortal enemies walk away if they gave him a good match
That’s not wanderlust, it’s bloodlust. Just sanitized through pure-hearted Saiyan simplicity. Contrast that with Luffy, and it’s night and day. Luffy’s motivation isn’t just to fight or get stronger, he wants to live on his own terms, no matter how reckless or stupid those terms are. He actively seeks new islands, new people, new cultures. He’s fascinated by the world. Every arc in One Piece feels like Luffy choosing a path that leads to another layer of mystery or wonder.
Even when fights happen, it’s often because someone tried to violate someone’s freedom or ideals, not because Luffy just wanted to throw hands for the hell of it.
