I mean, it's pretty obvious. Mai assaulted Renako even while she was kicking her off and yelling "no, I don't want this". She could not have made it more clear that she didn't want Mai's advances at that time. Then, the series treats as though Renako is the one who hurt Mai for slapping her and getting mad, because "she was doing things in a half-hearted way". Renako having to be the one to go up to Mai and apologize despite being the victim is what ticked people off.
