Joseph Smith was eventually murdered without a trial by a mob. After they shot his brother in the face in front of him, he fired six shots back at them through the door of the jailhouse. Two men in the mob were hit and injured but later recovered. Joseph then jumped from the 1st floor window, taking bullets from more men gathered outside. The mob inside ran back out and shot more bullets into his corpse. The two friends of Joseph who had accompanied him and his brother to the jailhouse survived, later saying that they likely would have also been killed by the mob if Joseph had not jumped out of the room they were all in
