My own theory is that modern "people" avoid any and all real conflict and problems in their lives as much as possible. In unavoidable situations outsource it to crying about calling the authorities.
This causes their mental faculties to overcompensate and start creating fictional controversies out of alltogether meaningless things so they can experience conflict in a safe, completely controlled environment.
And so we arrive at people spending their time with video games for other reasons than fun and stories.
