I just wing it and move the camera around until it feels right really. I'd say I try to guide the viewer's gaze naturally by not making any side too overbearing that they take away focus from your character. Try to avoid background objects that blend in with your character as well. For example, in this picture the right side (the stairs) are guiding your gaze towards the character's upper body while the left side (the lantern) is catching your eye by being red and bright but also moving your gaze away back to the character as a reflex because our eyes don't like to stare at bright light sources. As a result your gaze is mostly focused on the circled area, then you start lowering it to see the rest of her body.
