>Medvedev has warned to wait for "further steps" from Russia regarding the deployment of short- and medium-range Russian missiles.

While this is not yet an official Russian position, we all understand that such statements would never be aired by Russia's main propaganda outlet without a green light from the Kremlin.

In October 1962, the world stood on the brink of nuclear catastrophe when the Soviet Union placed ballistic missiles in Cuba in response to the U.S. deployment of Jupiter missiles in Turkey.

The Cuban Missile Crisis marked the peak of Cold War tensions. The USSR and the U.S. teetered on the edge of war but ultimately managed to negotiate a peaceful resolution. Soviet missiles were withdrawn from Cuba, and American missiles were removed from Turkey.

Now, Putin appears to be playing the Cuban card again - escalating tensions once more. He is incapable of diplomacy or negotiation - only blackmail and terror.

Today's situation is even more complex, not just due to the confrontation between Russia and the U.S. but also because of the interests of other global players like China. Despite its partnership with Moscow, Beijing is unlikely to welcome an escalation that threatens global stability and China's economic interests.

The world must act together to stop Putin now - or the consequences could be catastrophic.
