It’s because most men belong to the vulgus, anon. The vulgus are inherently vulgar. They are not capable of higher discourse, and it is not good for you to partake in their crass ideas or crude sensibilities.

More noble souls should concern themselves only with the lofty opinions of the enlightened few. Seek out this higher discourse.

I find much warmth in the Philokalia, for example.

I pray that Christ grants men like us wisdom, anon—for only the Truth incarnate possesses truth. Mere men cannot deliver any lasting wisdom apart from what God gives them.

Do not seek wisdom where none exists.
