It's the the edge of a steep hill the Ukrainians are at the top of and doesn't have any good roads to access it that are under Russian control meanwhile it's at the end of a Ukrainian controlled highway.

The Russians just needed it to block that road into Pokrovsk which is is doing and the flank of the other side of the city is through much more favorable terrain for Russian advance with good roads to supply them.
