It's certainly a learning experience
For instance, I've learned that one of the better ways to do soft lighting is to actually not try and guess the appropriate color and draw it in, but to do everything in the base color, then take a brush with pure white or pure black, set the opacity to 3-10%, and then use that to get the shade that you want.
Helps for tracing the edges of bodies or objects that way too
