Fire Erupts at Major Russian Artillery Shell Factory
A fire broke out on Friday at a key Russian defense factory in the city of Orsk that manufactures a significant portion of the country's artillery shells and components for multiple-launch rocket systems.
Video and photos verified by news outlet ASTRA showed thick black smoke billowing from the Mechanical Plant, located on Mir Avenue in the Orenburg region, approximately 900 miles southeast of Moscow.
Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the blaze started in a paint shop within the facility due to the ignition of solvent and paint. Twenty firefighters and eight vehicles were dispatched to the scene and extinguished the fire, according to the local news outlet Ural56. Local officials stated that the incident was not connected to "external threats" and posed no danger to the public.
The Orsk Mechanical Plant is a critical node in Russia's military-industrial complex. According to an official company brochure, the facility produces more than half of the nation's supply of certain calibers of artillery shells. It also retains the technology and equipment to manufacture components for the Uragan and Smerch multiple-launch rocket systems, both of which have been used extensively in the war in Ukraine. The plant produces a wide range of shell casings, from 75mm to 152mm.
