The same thing happened in Ulster prior to them taking up residence with a far greater number of Irish being slaughtered and starved by English forces. There was still people alive who remembered that. Most the British were driven out and died from exposure rather than the sword. Scots killed English settlers during it too in places too. It wasn't even the policy of the leaders of the rebellion to kill the settlers but they lost control of the situation and lots of people who'd lost land wanted to settle the score with those who'd be given their land and would have despised them. There was an army formed by the Protestants in West Ulster to protect themselves and a 3rd of that army was Irish Catholics and I bet you didn't know that. And I places other Irish Catholics and rebel leaders in sheltered and protected the Protestants until the chaos calmed down and the massacres committed by both sides stopped. Cromwells forces killed way more of the Protestants in Ulster than the Irish Catholics did and the Laggan army eventually joined sides with the Catholic confederates against Parliament.
