Nasu is pretty schizophrenic there in what Avalon does. Like how Merlin(s) cause Avalon to affect people and it manifests more as healing, Castoria does something similar and instead it's a Purge Defense effect.
Even in the original VN, the Avalon (scabbard) in spite of explicitly taking you to Avalon to heal and dodge shit, it bounced Enuma Elish's beam back at Gilgamesh.
