For example, I have the 4 cities surrounding me divided into individual police/fire groups; allowing me to listen (or not) with precision. It's also handy for listening to the inter-department broadcasts when special events are going on.
Since police radios (and scanners have gone to the Trunked P-25 systems; it's a whole new world. It's all broadcast off many/most cell phone towers; so you can listen to departments 50 miles away as though they were next door.
